Introducing the trap:
Food moth traps work by attracting male insects of the aforementioned species in a way, which imitates the method that female insects use in their natural environment to lure their potential mates. Male moths, looking for females, are caught in traps containing a substitute of natural insect pheromones. As a result, female insects cannot be fertilized, and the natural reproductive cycle is thus interrupted.
Guidelines:
Once the food moth monitoring traps are installed, male insects are unable to locate females and mate with them.
When placing insect monitoring traps, it is essential to follow several important rules:
- Place monitoring traps in close proximity of -but not directly next to – food storage sites. This is to divert male insects away from any female insects which might be located there.
- Avoid placing monitoring traps near windows, which are opened for ventilation, or in other locations with a high rate of air exchange, such as air vents. Pheromones released from traps placed in such locations could get out of the monitored area, leading to the undesirable effect of intensified luring of male moths from outdoors.
- Place monitoring traps on top of cupboards in which food products are stored. One trap is sufficient for an area of up to 100m2. Do not place more than one monitor trap per 50m2 to avoid interference between pheromones released by the traps.
